The previous map was approved by the Florida legislature in 2022 after the 2020 U.S. Census was released.Normally, redistricting is conducted every 10 years after the U.S. Census releases data on the population for each state.Democrats have claimed that the rare mid-decade redistricting map proposed by DeSantis was gerrymandered to favor Republicans, while DeSantis, a Republican, said the map accounts for the state’s population growth after the COVID-19 pandemic.The mid-decade redistricting follows a national trend of states redrawing congressional districts after Republican President Donald Trump asked the state of Texas, that leans Republican, to make a new congressional district map that gave Republicans the advantage in five additional districts.That led Democratic-leaning states like California and Virginia among others, to redraw congressional district maps for their states to match Republican states that made changes.
